Noise

I closed my eyes and opened my ears to the sound of unfiltered everyday life.
Passing cars, a gas turned on, running water of a distant sink, door against wood frame, my breathing, ticking clock, heating system, my stomach, a cold fridge, foot steps, brushing leaves, air through window crack…
…and I started to laugh, because I […]

Chin-chin envy

The 3-year-old boy I nanny for has an 8-month-old brother who, in his eyes, is taking away all the attention.
One time I caught the 3-year-old pinching the baby and saying “my chin-chin is bigger than yours!”
Where have I heard this before?
(I’ll let you guess what chin-chin means in Japanese)

Red cabbage and udon

All day today I’ve been craving to eat a bowl of kimchi-udon. My father would never understand this particular craving. For him, udon is too much like worms.

Night sky

When I was two, I pointed to the stars and said “Bang!” My mum thought I was a genius.

I found […]

Fish face

My brother recently got over his fear of eating whole fish that had a face on it. He felt too intimate with the creature that obviously once swam freely in a water.
On the other hand, I would take one good look at the fish’s face and start by eating its eyes (apparently a good source of DHA).
Nowadays I go to the […]

Smell of burnt muffin

I stole a frozen muffin that my roommate had made, and put it in the microwave to defrost. A smell of emergency woke me from my musical daydream (I was wearing headphones), and I turned to see the microwave smoking like an illegal chimney.
Despite my effort to rid of the stench, evidence remains on […]

Socks

16 odd socks to be exact. How does this happen? I check the washer before leaving, I dry them in pairs, but find myself having to wear odd socks all the time. Maybe my socks are odd to begin with?
