Phobias

My worst nightmare (or phobia), is to be stuck inside a narrow and dirty tunnel. A sewer pipe, for example. The chances of me ending up in a sewer pipe is very slim, but I think about it so much that I feel as if I am training myself mentally for the big day.

I found a list of different phobias in Schott’s Original Miscellany. Here are a few:

Beards……………………….pogonophobia
Fall of satellites……keraunothnetophobia
Tickling with feathers…….pteronophobia
Sharks……………………….selachophobia
Clowns…………………………coulrophobia
Getting wrinkles…………….rhytidophobia
Going to school…………….didaskaleinophobia (Andie?)

I couldn’t find fish face phobia.

I have a balloon phobia. I guess it could be considered a fear of sudden loud noises, or the anticipation of them.

I’m a mess at children’s parties when kids are running around with balloons. I’ve also been known to walk out of stores if they’re filling balloons with helium.

Is there a name for this phobia?

I just don’t like tiny spaces. Freaks me out! Oh, a beard phobia?!?!? So what is it called when you are obsessed with facial hair??? I might have that ;)

Maybe they’re referring to the ‘beard phobia’ that cats have? :P Check it out on the ‘Improbable Rsearch’ website: http://www.improbable.com/airchives/classical/cat/cat.html.

As for training yourself mentally for the big day… as a slightly paranoid child, I used to practice writing with my left arm instead of my right, in case the right ever got amputated, and I also used to practice jumping from a bed on one side of the room to a bed on the other, in case I ever had to jump across a ravine, or crocodile infested river, etc.

We had a lot of spare time in the country..!

Trina, I have that same ‘fear’ of loud and unexpected sounds. Balloons, of course, are the worst culprit. I cringe when a balloon gets close to a heat source. Loud sounds also cause actual pain in my ears, a very uncomfortable feeling.

I think pogonophobia may be part of the reason behind the so-called “Santa Clause fear” many children show at a young age.

    that’s so funny………..

when I was a kid, I lived in this really rural area, on a cul-de-sac. at the end of the cul-de-sac was a drainage pipe that went under my friends property to the creek that flowed behind all our houses and we spent HOURS in that thing when we were kids. it was a BLAST!

I’m all about claustrophobia (sp?). Hate small closed in spaces. I have even taken all of the interior doors out of my house except those on the bathrooms. Also I have a fear of heights. Well, maybe not a fear per se but definitely a high level of uncomfortable. Went to the Empire State Building once and could only get off the elevator and stand beside it. In Tokyo Tower there was a plexigass “window” in the floor and the bottoms of my feet ached just to see it. A small child was sitting on it getting his picture taken and I wanted to throw a rope around him and drag him off!

I used to have a fear of flying until I started working for my company, which provides services to the airline industry. Once I got a perspective on how many thousands of flights take off and land every day I just got bored with flying!
