About the war

By writing, I hope to rationalize my mixed feelings about the war in Iraq.
First of all, I feel it was a good thing to have toppled Saddam Hussein who was no doubt an oppressive dictator. I am comforted by the notion of America being the good international cowboy, assertively stepping into problem areas around the […]

Life theatre

Buses carry loads of strangers to and fro. Without intention, those strangers take part in an art I like to call ‘life theatre’.
Today, as interesting as it was with the mix of ethnicities and loud voices, a big, fat man came on smelling like a large haystack worth of burning ganja.
He climbed the three steps […]

Anti-war demonstration 18th March

I recieved an email notice of tomorrow’s rally in downtown San Fransisco. The email also called for weekly anti-war meetings.
I jotted down the details of the rally on my calender, when a thought occured that this very act would be a matter of life and death in North Korea. A sudden fear gripped me. I […]

Gold shoes

In the morning hours before work, I was on my way in search for gold shoes when a pretty lady stopped me and said “are you Ayumi? I read your blog”. We walked and talked, I felt all ticklish inside, went around the block without realizing I had walked passed the store, came back around […]

Street Sheet

It’s the trade of the San Francisco homeless. Those who sell it are usually more concerned that you read the article than you pay the $1 suggested minimum donation.

The seller’s days of rough living are evident in the smell of the paper.
A poem caught my attention. It’s by Mario Pometta.
…………
I got clean underwear, I got […]

Something about Frog hats

We encountered them in Japan. We put one on, couldn’t get enough, bought 7 for each day of the week.
When Tyler and I get into an argument (which is very rare), we make it a rule to wear frog hats. It’s ‘frog-head time’, and suddenly our squabble becomes an exchange of serious laughter.

Chaharshanbe Suri

I wonder if insects like to gather around light just as people like to gather around fire.
There were several bon-fires on the beach tonight, where people gathered to celebrate a Persian (Iranian) festival called Chaharshanbe Suri.

As a purification rite, we jumped over the fire to exchange our yellowness (ill health) with the fire’s vibrant redness […]

Snail

Different life forms must look bigger in a child’s eyes. In his garden, we found a snail and took it back home. After a while, the snail unwound and took a sticky stroll on the delighted boy’s hand.

I remember the texture of insects well. I used to stomp on ants and grasshoppers and feel thier […]

Matchmaking 2

Spring has come.

As part of my mischievious matchmaking plan, 3 friends and I went camping. Something may or may not have sprouted, but the flowers were surely looking happy this sun-filled day.

Antenna

The antenna of a television wasn’t working. The only way to watch the 6 o’clock news was to have somebody hold the antenna, so that person, made 70% of water, could transmit television frequencies. Interesting to think that our bodies relay all sorts of different waves.
Today my employer was in a bad mood. I felt […]
