Feel like I’m in my mother’s womb, completely at peace in this two-door mobile cocoon. I love that a white canvas is always, unconditionally welcoming. I feel the excitement of holding a paintbrush before an unbiased canvas. ‘So what’s it to be?’ the blank screen says.
“Hey look, there’s a computer glowing inside a car.”
“There’s a […]

Quickly name three animals.
……………
Once you do, come up with three adjectives for each animal.
……………
Please read my comment to find what they signify.
……………
I answered: rabbit, giraffe, elephant.
I described rabbit as small, pure and warm.
Giraffe as tall, thoughts always up in the air, and at peace.
Elephant as slow paced, know what they are doing and huggable.

Several years ago, a pianist friend and I performed a song for my company in Tokyo. Our show turned out to be a nightmare, having not practiced together before. We both felt very embarassed.
My company boss later asked me if my friend was blind. (He is). Then gave me a 10,000 yen (100 dollar) bill […]

Today I received specific instructions for what to wear during my one week company visit to Japan. It read “day 1; Nara factory tour=suit. Day 2; Tokyo factory tour=suit. Day 3; company dinner party=national native dress.”
This Japanese company I occasionally translate for has branches around the world. I will be sent to represent the American […]

“Mottai nai” is a Japanese word that I haven’t found an English translation for. It’s used frequently to mean “what a waste”, or […]

I read a most interesting article today about the Piraha tribe who live in the Amazon. According to a study by Peter Gordon, (Columbia University NY): “In the 300 member tribe, …the word for “one” can also mean “a few”, while “two” can also be used to refer to “not many”.
The Pirahas are the only […]

There are many homeless people on the streets of San Francisco. There is often debate about whether handing them money is a good thing, or if ‘they just buy beer with it’. The latter claims giving to charity is a better investment of your money. Perhaps so.
What if a group of homeless people were given […]

“Do you exercise?” an acquaintance asked.
“I don’t follow a routine sport, but I find myself running a lot. Chasing after kids, running after a bus, rushing to get to work, being chased by cops,” I replied.
Later in the day I found myself sprinting as fast as I could to get back home. My heart was […]
