World Flood Map

The recent cyclone in Burma has lead me to search more about climate change, which has lead me to the website Treehugger, which has lead me to this page, which has lead me to this map.

The map is created by Alex Tingle, where “users can adjust the sea level in 1 meter increments up to 14 and observe the consequences of the rise for coastal areas around the world.” Made not to alarm, but to inform.

Oddly, I feel somewhat of a relief about the world climate rising up against civilization. Like the Tower of Babel, when men claim more power than we can afford, a higher power puts us back in perspective. The tragedy, and what angers me, is when people suffer the consequences caused by others.

I am reminded of a lady who drives, almost daily, 4 miles away to a Starbucks on a SUV for a latte, because she isn’t content with a perfectly good coffee maker at home. How satirical that she reads the news about global warming in her idling car.

One humanity is real. It’s really real. Not only in the spiritual sense, but in a physical sense; we see it happening right before our eyes.

Drives 4 miles for a coffee? Geez.

    That’s pretty ridiculous.

The environment is good example of something which has benefited from the breaking down of political walls and the depoliticizing of an issue. However it was only made into a political issue in the first place by pressure from desperate corporate lobbyist who demonized solid scientific evidence and the environmental movements because they did not want anything to change that would affect their bottom line. I don’t understand why the right took the bait. Especially since they themselves had nothing to gain by doing so. Why were the right so quick to jump on the liberal hating, scientific conspiracy bandwagon?

I’ve been making maps related to global warming and climate change: what the status quo is, what the projections are, and what people are trying to do about it.

Living in a city is a start…one doesn’t have to travel too far for a latte!

The sea level rise maps I’m making are 9 times more accurate than flood map site. They’re cool because they show sea level rise globally. But they lack the resolution and accuracy since they’re using 90m resolution data. I’m using 10m resolution…
