Ear cleaning

My friend went to the ear doctor and had extracted enough earwax to fill a shot glass. “I can hear so much better!” His mood was 1 shot glass lighter.

The doctor warned him not to use Q tips, saying it pushes ear wax further in, which was why my friend lost hearing in one ear and had to see the doctor. “Q tips are also dangerous” he said, “see a doctor once or twice a year to get it professionally cleaned. That’s all the cleaning anybody really needs.”

So what shall I do with a big box of Q tips at home?  Well,

Voom!

That’s one Q tip well used.

P.S. The doctor also advised against ear candling.

So how *should* I remove my ear wax?!

Strangely, one of the few words of Thai I can still recall is “kat hoo”, which means ear wax removal. Never did try it.

Yes, that is what I want to know. What about mimikaki? After taking so many years of blood, sweat and tears (not mine but someone else’s), it is found out that there are two kinds of ear wax! This is sotrta gross, but dry kind and wet kind. Asian people tend to have the dry one whereas African or Caucasian have the wet. I have always used mimikaki up until I moved here, but I saw my husband (Caucasian) use Q tips to clean his ears, which looked somewhat pleasant than mimikaki. So I started using Q tips… Now that I read this post, I am anti-Q tips and am about to initiate pro-mimikaki movement!

I use q-tips every day! I also candle thoroughly about every 3 or 4 months. I’m kind of a clean ears fanatic. You have burst my bubble here Ayumi!

Yeah, I love q tips, like scratching the back of the neck. if i was a cat..

the doctor said “just come to me every once in a while, -normally twice a year would suffice- and wipe the outside of the ear (don;t go in) if necessary)

so,,, i guess that’s it? i want to go to the doctor and see…

I use q-tips everyday. If I waited and had my ears cleaned once or twice a year by the doc, then I’d be deaf for a large % of time. Not too mention having leaky ears.

I think it boils down to preference, but no offense, that doctor sounds like a quack. Q-tips do NOT push wax farther in your ear! I remember not properly cleaning my ears when I was a child and having the doctor clean my ears. My brother laughed while the doctor scolded me…for not cleaning my ears!
