Harp Sympitar

I’m back at the ol’ office temping while the new EA’s on holiday for 2 weeks. The desk where I used to sit is prettied up to the taste of the fabulous young lady who took over me.
5 minute talks in the kitchen can get you as far as the weather, or squeek a door open just enough […]

We protect what we know

I was looking at a photo journal of people from differing cultures; Ivy league Presbyterians, mixed raced teenagers at Fuji Rock Festival, Russian orthodox Jews, etc.
One photograph caught my attention. It was a picture of a girl standing in a meadow, hands gently folded on top of her long denim skirt, wearing a buttoned up […]

Sign Spinning

I saw him spinning an ad for Little Ceasers Pizza.
He used the banner like a baton, flipping, tossing, spinning, occasionally giving us a signature pose, waving at the on going cars. I had to go over and talk to him.
“Yeah, we’re called ’sign spinners’, I belong to an advertisement company.”
“And everyone in your company spins […]

Luxury Camping

Went camping over the weekend, to celebrate a friends’ birthday.
Luxurious were the clean toilets with heated floors, a sauna, electric sockets and a coin laundry.
Unbeknown to us, we went prepared with waterless hand sanitizer and steel flint for fire.
We felt strange ‘camping’ amongst large trailers (some even had brought with them city scooters!) We put up our […]

Chimney

“Hey Ayumi, can you help me out here?” one of my roommates asked.
“What is it?” I went into his room.
He beaconed me to the fireplace. ”Something up there?” I asked.
“It’s been up there a month” he said, laying on his back, looking into the chimney with a torch.
It was a pigeon.
”I’ve been trying to get him […]

Noon bells and spring

I hear church bells playing Peace on Earth. It sounds like a recording. I’ve heard the church ring real bells before, but today is not as deserving a day I suppose. It’s noon on Wednesday. I notice that they play a recording, of Peace on Earth, every day at noon.
A big computer screen nests in scattered bits […]

Life and plans

I’ve been a hermit the past week, watching the sun rise and set (more times set than rise) in my room, studying for the California Subject Examination for Teachers.
I took the first portion of the test today at a high school overlooking the Bay.
Forgot to mention that the ‘job coach’ position I was initially excited […]

A shoe

A man on a wheelchair with one broken foot lounged around the public fountain. On his healthy foot, he had on a white, new shoe.
From a distance, a man in crutches ambled his way towards the fountain, to the best of his three foot ability.
The man on the wheel chair saw the man in crutches coming. He gasped for air in hurried delight, […]

Live music

Went to see ZooStation (U2 tribute band) yesterday for a night of good entertainment. To my surprise there was a group of 4th graders bouncing up and down. Adults had them all wear ear plugs, and they played ‘following the leader’ to stage right, stage left, then right up to the toes of the singer, […]
