Blog Binge 3: Live chicken for sale
A few months ago I encountered a long line at a farmer’s market.
Curiosity lead me to the front of the line, where I saw what the big deal was: 2 live chickens for sale at $12. Great deal, surely. Stacks of cages held lively chickens inside, and a lady took two out by its feet, stuffed them in a brown paper bag, stapled the bag together and handed it to each customer.
What amazed me was that these customers, all Chinese, knew how to kill a chicken and make food out of them! (A skill I’d like to learn)
I told this to my friends and they looked at each other in surprise.
“That other story must be true then!”
”What other story?” I asked, so they told me what they’ve heard.
A small Chinese lady got on a bus with a bag of chicken, still alive.
“No maam, you ain’t bringing that livin’ thing on my bus” the African American bus driver protested.
So the Chinese lady took the chicken out, snapped its neck, and took a seat on the bus.
