What is it about Thomas the Tank Engine?
The two year old boy I look after has developed an infatuation with Thomas the Tank Engine. He loves trains of all sorts, but he’s got a special soft spot for trains with faces. Just today, I talked to two women whose toddler boys are also obsessed with trains. “Thomas” is the first thing he says when he wakes up” one of the lady said.
The other day at a book store, I overheard a conversation.
“Nobody encouraged him to love trains this much”
“I really don’t understand it. Funny it’s always boys who get hooked on trains, and cars and things”
Come to think of it, what do toddler girls get obsessed about? Horses?

Funny you mention that! Well, Cairo, 14month old, loves to read Thomas the train book and he loves his little Thomas toy. He can’t really distinguish the difference between cars and trains yet, but whatever it is, he goes “brnnnn brnnn” and loves it!!!! Some hidden message in that face maybe????

Caleb, my 3-year-old nephew, loves Thomas the Tank Engine. He also knows most of the other characters on Thomas’ show by name. Yes, there must be something about that show that fascinates toddlers!
July 28th, 2010 at 8:22 pmI remember going through a train phase myself as a kid (though I don’t recall anything with Thomas, even though he’s been around for a long time). Not exactly sure why, though. It went away after a while, but I still always get a little nostalgic about trains.
July 29th, 2010 at 3:50 pmThere was one time when I felt I understood the excitement of waving to a train. I was waiting for my ride on the platform, when I saw the train approach and it felt like a friend. Difficult to explain, but the train made me happy and I thought maybe this is what train lovers feel.
